Kindergarten

  • Our Reading Specialists spend the first 9 weeks of the school year working 30 minutes every day in the Kindergarten classroom.  During this time, they collaborate with the classroom teacher to present lessons and activities to develop students' skills.  After the initial 9 weeks, they identify Kindergarten students who are performing below expectations and would benefit from receiving additional Reading support.  These children, generally 4-6 students at a time, visit the Reading Specialist's classroom for 30 minutes every day to receive additional instruction in the areas of letter identification, letter sounds, phonemic awareness, identifying sight words, as well as many other Kindergarten skills.  This instruction does not replace the instruction they receive within their classroom but is simply another layer of support to ensure they develop the skills they need to be successful.

  • Helping your Kindergarten student at home

     

    1.  Talk with your child's classroom teacher and Reading Specialist to find out exactly what skills your child is practicing at school.  They are experts who can provide you with a wealth of information about your child and specific activities you can do at home to target his/her reading needs.

     

    2.  Ask your child to name different letters as you move about your day.  Look for letters on road signs, billboards, magazines, and even on TV.

     

    3.  When your child recognizes a letter, ask him/her to reproduce the sound the letter makes and even name words that begin with that sound.

     

    4.  Read and/or recite nursery rhymes together.  Talk about the words that rhyme.  Ask your child to name other words that rhyme.

     

    5.  Make sight word flash cards to practice with at home.  Make two of each word and you can create your very own Memory game.  Children will love spending the time playing a game with you while practicing those words.
