The Washington Elementary School Media Center serves the entire student and teacher population.  The print holdings for students and teachers total approximately 10,400 books of hardback fiction, non-fiction, reference and professional books.  Materials are checked out by the Media Aide using the Follett Destiny automated circulation system.

The video collection totals approximately 830 videos that are available for teachers’ use.  Videos are purchased to correlate with the curriculum of K-5 subjects and are used to enhance the ideas and themes presented in those subjects.

Forty minutes classes are scheduled for each class once every other week, yet flexible scheduling is available too.  Students are allowed to come to the library to exchange their library book any time a class is not being held.  The Media Center has eight computers connected to the Internet via Broadband Cable that are available for student and staff use.

Along with books and videos, we also have available for teacher use:  digital cameras, data projectors, models, art prints, overheads, puppets, and big books.

The Media Center is indeed a place of inquiry for the students and staff of Washington School.  Media programming includes story time where they are introduced to award winning books and authors, location and care of materials, and instruction in the use of the Follett automated card catalog system.  Selection criteria for all media materials includes feedback from staff and students, professional reviews, knowledge of our current inventory, all correlated with the Common Core and ALA/AECT National Standards of Information Power and the National Literacy Standards.

A controlled environment is enforced for the safety, security and freedom of all patrons.  Safety procedures of various kinds are discussed with the students regularly and drills are used to reinforce the procedures learned.

Our Media Center is staffed by Mrs. Debbie Odum, Certified Library Support Staff, and overseen by Mrs. Roxanne Price, Media Specialist for Marion CUSD#2 Elementary Schools.
