Dear Parent/Guardian,

Marion Unit #2 Food Service is changing things up for the 2013-2014 school year! We are excited to inform you about these changes that we believe will be beneficial to your children, as well as the entire district. These changes will only be made in the elementary buildings and the Adams K-8 facility.

In the past when students were served their meal at lunch, they did not have the option of declining food items, or picking and choosing what they would like to eat. We are going to make this possible for the 2013-2014 school year. The program that we are going to implement is called "Offer vs. Serve." We currently use this program successfully at Marion Jr. High and Marion High School. In Offer vs. Serve, the students are allowed to pick for themselves which food components they would like to eat. In the past, students have been served all five food components regardless if they planned on eating it or not, only to throw away what they do not want. The students will be offered the same amount of food as in the past, but they will not have to take it if they do not intend on eating it. There is a minimum amount of food items that a student does indeed have to take to constitute a meal, and we will be helping the students with this. The program allows students to make their own decisions, they have more options as far as choices of food, and the district saves on food costs as not as much food is needed and/or thrown away.
